An epidermal cyst is a small, fluid-filled lump that forms under the skin. It’s caused by a blockage in a sweat gland which is a gland that produces oil. Epidermal cysts are often painless and harmless, but they can become infected or inflamed.
They can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the face, neck, chest, and back.
During your initial consultation, your doctor will examine your skin to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any concerning features.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, your doctor will discuss your treatment options. Cysts are typically removed by making a small cut over the cyst and removing it completely.
The procedure will be performed under local anaesthesia and should take approximately 30 minutes. The procedure may leave a scar, but it should fade over time. We’ll send the sample to our local pathology lab for confirmation of the diagnosis and notify your GP of the results.
