A mole (medically known as a naevus) is a common skin growth that develops when pigment-producing cells cluster together beneath the skin's surface. Most people have between 10 and 40 moles, and the vast majority are entirely harmless.
However, moles can change over time — and some changes are worth having looked at by a doctor. Others cause physical discomfort, catching on clothing or jewellery, or are simply something you'd prefer not to have. In either case, removal is a straightforward, well-established procedure.
Not everything that looks like a mole is one. Seborrhoeic keratoses — warty-textured growths that become common from the age of 40 onwards — are routinely mistaken for moles, and smaller skin tags in skin folds can look similar too. Your consultation includes a close dermatoscopic examination so we can confirm exactly what the lesion is before discussing treatment.
At Waverley Park, every mole assessment begins with a thorough clinical examination using dermatoscopy — a specialist magnification technique that allows our GPs to examine pigment patterns and cellular structure in detail before any decision is made. Read our complete mole removal guide →
When to act promptly: if a mole has changed in size, shape, or colour — or bleeds, itches, or has an irregular or asymmetric border — book an assessment with your own GP. Early review is always the right decision.
Asymmetry · Border irregularity · Colour variation · Diameter over 6mm · Evolving or changing appearance. If your mole ticks any of these boxes, seek GP assessment promptly.
Every step is carried out by an experienced GP in our clinical treatment room. You'll be guided clearly through what to expect at each stage.
Your first visit is a dedicated consultation — separate from the procedure itself. Using a dermatoscope, your GP examines the mole's pigment patterns, borders, and structure in close detail. The procedure is fully explained so you can make an informed decision. If removal is appropriate, a date for your procedure is provided at the end of this appointment.
On the day of your procedure, a small injection of local anaesthetic numbs the area — most patients feel only a brief sting. Within a minute or two the area is completely numb, and the mole is removed using either surgical or shave excision, depending on what was agreed at your consultation. The wound is dressed and you're free to go. The procedure itself is entirely painless. How painful is mole removal? →
All removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for histological analysis. The results are sent directly to your own GP, who will advise on any further steps if required.
You'll leave with clear written aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment booked to remove sutures — typically 7 to 14 days later, depending on the site. Our team is available to answer any questions during your recovery. How long does healing take? →
We offer both surgical excision and shave excision, and the appropriate technique is chosen based on the site and appearance of your mole. Surgical excision removes the mole in full — including the base — and is closed with fine sutures. Shave excision is used where the mole's profile and location make it the more suitable option. Both methods allow the tissue to be sent for histological analysis. Laser vs surgical excision — which is better? →
All mole removal results in some degree of scarring, but our GPs use fine sutures and careful closure technique to keep this as minimal as possible. Most scars fade significantly over 6 to 12 months and become barely noticeable on most skin types. Does mole removal leave a scar? →
Mole removal at Waverley Park may be suitable if you:
Your appointment takes around 30 to 45 minutes in total, including the consultation, procedure, and dressing. No hospital admission is required. Most patients drive themselves home and return to work or normal daily activity the same day. Some mild soreness is normal for a day or two and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
You do not need a GP referral to book an appointment with us. Simply contact us directly by phone or through our online form. We typically have appointments available within a few days — not weeks or months.
Some lesions that look like moles turn out to be something else. If yours feels like a lump under the skin rather than a pigmented spot on it, it may be a cyst or lipoma; if it has a rough, waxy surface, it could be a seborrhoeic keratosis. All of these are removed in a similar single-appointment procedure — your consultation will confirm which one you have and which removal procedure is appropriate.
We remove benign (non-cancerous) moles only. We do not treat or remove suspected skin cancers. If your GP or our clinical assessment raises any concern about malignancy, you will be advised to seek urgent referral through the appropriate NHS or specialist pathway. Meet the team →"I went to the doctor to have a small growth on my back checked. After being reassured it was bleeding because it was catching on my clothing — annoying, not sinister — I was offered the opportunity to have it removed at the surgery. It was duly removed one week later in a painless procedure in a calm environment. Highly recommend."
"She was excellent and dealt with all my issues in one appointment with no need for any follow up. Lovely staff to welcome you in the door too. I will definitely go back for any future treatments if needed and thoroughly recommend Dr Fraser for her kindness too."
"Have had an excellent experience at WPMP over the past few months. I was referred in from my GP to Dr Newman's clinic to have some painful lumps and bumps removed from my scalp. Have received excellent care from everyone at the Practice and would highly recommend."
