What is a mole, and when should you have it assessed?

A mole (medically known as a naevus) is a common skin growth that develops when pigment-producing cells cluster together beneath the skin's surface. Most people have between 10 and 40 moles, and the vast majority are entirely harmless.

However, moles can change over time — and some changes are worth having looked at by a doctor. Others cause physical discomfort, catching on clothing or jewellery, or are simply something you'd prefer not to have. In either case, removal is a straightforward, well-established procedure.

At Waverley Park, every mole assessment begins with a thorough clinical examination using dermatoscopy — a specialist magnification technique that allows our GPs to examine pigment patterns and cellular structure in detail before any decision is made. Read our complete mole removal guide →

When to act promptly: if a mole has changed in size, shape, or colour — or bleeds, itches, or has an irregular or asymmetric border — book an assessment with your own GP. Early review is always the right decision.

How we remove moles at Waverley Park

Every step is carried out by an experienced GP in our clinical treatment room. You'll be guided clearly through what to expect at each stage.

1

Consultation & Dermatoscopy

Your first visit is a dedicated consultation — separate from the procedure itself. Using a dermatoscope, your GP examines the mole's pigment patterns, borders, and structure in close detail. The procedure is fully explained so you can make an informed decision. If removal is appropriate, a date for your procedure is provided at the end of this appointment.

2

Local Anaesthetic & Mole Removal

On the day of your procedure, a small injection of local anaesthetic numbs the area — most patients feel only a brief sting. Within a minute or two the area is completely numb, and the mole is removed using either surgical or shave excision, depending on what was agreed at your consultation. The wound is dressed and you're free to go. The procedure itself is entirely painless. How painful is mole removal? →

3

Histological Analysis

All removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for histological analysis. The results are sent directly to your own GP, who will advise on any further steps if required.

4

Aftercare & Follow-up

You'll leave with clear written aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment booked to remove sutures — typically 7 to 14 days later, depending on the site. Our team is available to answer any questions during your recovery. How long does healing take? →

Which technique will be used?

We offer both surgical excision and shave excision, and the appropriate technique is chosen based on the site and appearance of your mole. Surgical excision removes the mole in full — including the base — and is closed with fine sutures. Shave excision is used where the mole's profile and location make it the more suitable option. Both methods allow the tissue to be sent for histological analysis. Laser vs surgical excision — which is better? →

What about scarring?

All mole removal results in some degree of scarring, but our GPs use fine sutures and careful closure technique to keep this as minimal as possible. Most scars fade significantly over 6 to 12 months and become barely noticeable on most skin types. Does mole removal leave a scar? →

Is mole removal right for me?

Mole removal at Waverley Park may be suitable if you:

  • Have a mole that is changing, bleeding, itching, or causing concern
  • Want a mole removed for cosmetic reasons
  • Have a mole that catches on clothing, a bra strap, or jewellery
  • Have been unable to get a timely NHS referral and want prompt private assessment
  • Want the peace of mind of histological analysis of your removed mole
  • Want a medically led procedure in a proper clinical environment

What to expect on the day

Your appointment takes around 30 to 45 minutes in total, including the consultation, procedure, and dressing. No hospital admission is required. Most patients drive themselves home and return to work or normal daily activity the same day. Some mild soreness is normal for a day or two and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

No referral, no waiting

You do not need a GP referral to book an appointment with us. Simply contact us directly by phone or through our online form. We typically have appointments available within a few days — not weeks or months.

Important: benign moles only

We remove benign (non-cancerous) moles only. We do not treat or remove suspected skin cancers. If your GP or our clinical assessment raises any concern about malignancy, you will be advised to seek urgent referral through the appropriate NHS or specialist pathway. Frequently asked questions

Does mole removal leave a scar?
All mole removal results in some degree of scarring, but our GPs use fine sutures and careful closure technique to minimise this. The scar typically starts as a thin pink line and fades significantly over 6 to 12 months. In most cases it becomes barely noticeable. We discuss realistic expectations for your specific mole and skin type at the consultation. Read more about scarring →
How long does the procedure take?
A typical appointment takes 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish — this includes the consultation, local anaesthetic, removal, dressing, and aftercare advice. You'll be able to leave under your own steam immediately afterwards.
Is the procedure painful?
The only discomfort most patients experience is a brief sting from the local anaesthetic injection — similar to a routine blood test. Once the area is numb, the removal itself is completely painless. Some mild soreness is normal for one to two days afterwards and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Read more about pain and comfort →
Do I need a referral from my NHS GP?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us by phone or online. We see patients within days, not weeks — so if you have a mole that's worrying you, there's no need to wait for an NHS appointment before getting it assessed.
How long does it take to heal?
Sutures are removed at a follow-up appointment 7 to 14 days after the procedure, depending on the location of the mole. The skin continues to heal and the scar to settle for several months after that. We'll give you clear aftercare instructions on the day, and our team is available if you have any questions during recovery. Full healing timeline →
Will the mole grow back?
The technique used — surgical or shave excision — is selected based on the site and appearance of your mole, and both are carried out with the aim of complete removal. Your GP will discuss the chosen approach with you at your consultation. If histology identifies anything that warrants further action, we will advise you clearly on next steps. Can moles grow back after removal? →
Do you remove skin cancers?
No. We remove benign (non-cancerous) moles only. We do not treat or remove suspected skin cancers. If our GP has any clinical concern about a mole's appearance during your assessment, you will be advised to seek an urgent referral through the appropriate NHS or specialist pathway rather than proceeding with private removal. Can I get a cancerous mole removed privately? →
What if the histology shows something concerning?
If histological analysis returns a result that requires further action, your GP will contact you promptly to discuss the findings and advise on the appropriate next steps — which may include referral to a specialist. The vast majority of removed moles are found to be entirely benign, but knowing either way is always preferable to uncertainty.
