A skin tag is a small, soft, fleshy growth attached to the skin by a narrow stalk. They are entirely benign and extremely common — affecting roughly half of all adults at some point in their lives. Skin tags most often appear in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing: the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and under the breasts are the most frequent sites.
Skin tags vary in size from a few millimetres to over a centimetre, and in colour from flesh-toned to slightly darker than the surrounding skin. They are painless unless they become irritated or catch on jewellery or clothing. Left untreated they do not resolve on their own, and while they present no medical risk, many people choose to have them removed for comfort or cosmetic reasons.
While skin tags are very distinctive in appearance, it is important to have any new or changing skin lesion properly assessed by a doctor before assuming it is benign. Some conditions can superficially resemble a skin tag — including certain warts, seborrhoeic keratoses, and very rarely malignant lesions.
Skin tag, mole, or something else? Small pigmented lesions in the neck, underarm, or groin areas are sometimes assumed to be skin tags when they are in fact moles, and rough or waxy-surfaced growths that look like a raised tag are often seborrhoeic keratoses. A dermatoscopic examination at your consultation lets us confirm exactly what each lesion is before discussing treatment.
Important: If a lesion is growing rapidly, bleeding without trauma, changing colour, or feels firm rather than soft and fleshy, please discuss it with your own GP before booking private removal.
Skin tags form in areas of repeated friction. They become more common with age, weight gain, pregnancy, and in people with type 2 diabetes or a family tendency to develop them. Hormonal changes are also thought to play a role. Removing a skin tag does not prevent new ones from forming elsewhere, but any individual tag that is fully removed will not grow back.
Your consultation and procedure may take place on the same day or on separate appointments — your GP will advise what is most appropriate for your situation.
Your GP examines each skin tag, confirms the diagnosis, and discusses the most appropriate removal method. The procedure is explained so you can make a fully informed decision. If there is any uncertainty about the nature of a lesion, your GP will advise accordingly — not everything that looks like a skin tag necessarily is one.
A small injection of local anaesthetic is given to numb the area completely. Your GP then removes the skin tag precisely using surgical scissors or a scalpel — the tag is excised cleanly and immediately, with no waiting for it to fall away. The wound is small and typically requires only a simple dressing. If sutures are needed (occasionally required for larger tags), these are placed at the time of removal.
All excised tissue is sent to an accredited laboratory for histological analysis. This confirms the benign nature of the lesion and ensures that nothing unexpected is missed — providing an additional layer of clinical reassurance.
Skin tag removal requires very little aftercare. Excision sites are small and heal quickly — usually within one to two weeks. You will leave with clear written aftercare instructions. If sutures have been placed, these can be removed at Waverley Park or at your own GP surgery — whichever is more convenient. You can return to normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.
Multiple skin tags can generally be treated at a single appointment, making it practical to address several tags in one visit. The number suitable for one session depends on their size, location, and distribution across the body — your GP will advise at consultation. There is no strict limit, and we aim to treat as many as is safely and comfortably achievable in one appointment.
Although skin tags are almost always benign, sending excised tissue to the laboratory provides important clinical reassurance. Occasionally, lesions that clinically resemble a skin tag prove to be something different on histological examination. Routine histological analysis is included as standard at Waverley Park — it costs you nothing extra and ensures nothing is missed.
Skin tag removal at Waverley Park is suitable for adults with one or more confirmed skin tags who are in good general health. You may be an ideal candidate if you:
Every skin tag removal at Waverley Park is performed by one of our experienced GPs, at a practice with over 20 years of minor surgery expertise gained across NHS and private settings. All procedures are medically led, giving you the reassurance of proper clinical care throughout.
If you have any doubt about the nature of a skin lesion, a consultation with one of our GPs is the right first step. Small pigmented tags are sometimes moles, and rough-surfaced raised tags can turn out to be seborrhoeic keratoses. All of these are removed by similar single-appointment procedures at Waverley Park — your consultation will confirm which you have and the correct approach. We will never remove a lesion that requires further assessment before treatment.
All costs are confirmed at your consultation. You will never be surprised by an unexpected charge.
Prices include consultation deduction and procedure
Skin tag removal at Waverley Park starts from £350 for a single tag. A discount is available when multiple lesions are treated at the same appointment. An initial consultation costs £50, which is deducted from your treatment fee if you go ahead. All pricing is confirmed at consultation depending on the number and location of your tags.
Skin tag removal at Waverley Park is performed under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is painless. You may feel a brief sting when the anaesthetic is injected, but the removal is entirely comfortable. Most patients find it a very straightforward experience. Any mild tenderness at the site afterwards typically settles within a day or two.
Yes — multiple skin tags can usually be treated at a single appointment, across the same or different body areas. This makes it efficient to deal with several tags at once rather than booking multiple visits. The number that can be treated in one session depends on their size, number, and distribution, which your GP will assess and advise on at consultation.
Skin tag removal by surgical excision leaves a small flat mark that typically fades to be barely noticeable within a few months. In the vast majority of cases, the cosmetic result is considerably better than the tag itself — which is the whole point of having them removed.
A fully removed skin tag will not regrow at the same site. However, if you are prone to developing skin tags, new ones can form at other locations over time — this is related to your individual skin type, weight, hormonal factors, and friction patterns, rather than the removal method. There is nothing that can be done to prevent new skin tags from developing, but each treated tag is permanently gone.
Skin tags are completely benign and do not become cancerous. They pose no medical risk. That said, it is always worth having a new or unusual skin lesion checked by a doctor rather than assuming it is a skin tag — other conditions can occasionally mimic them. Any lesion that is growing quickly, bleeding, or changing should be assessed by your own GP before booking private removal.
Skin tags develop in areas of repeated friction — where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They become more common with age, weight gain, and during pregnancy. People with type 2 diabetes or a family history of skin tags are also more prone to them. Hormonal changes are thought to play a role too. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent them from developing, but individual tags that are removed will not return.
Most skin tag removal appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes from start to finish. A single small tag can often be removed in under 15 minutes. Treating multiple tags in different locations naturally takes a little longer. Your GP will give you a realistic estimate at consultation based on your individual situation.
No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with us. At that appointment, our GP will assess your skin tags and confirm they are suitable for removal. If there is any clinical uncertainty about a lesion, we will advise you on the appropriate next steps — which may include a referral for further investigation before proceeding.
"I went to the doctor to have a small growth on my back checked. After being reassured it was bleeding because it was catching on my clothing — annoying, not sinister — I was offered the opportunity to have it removed at the surgery. It was duly removed one week later in a painless procedure in a calm environment. Highly recommend."
"She was excellent and dealt with all my issues in one appointment with no need for any follow up. Lovely staff to welcome you in the door too. I will definitely go back for any future treatments if needed and thoroughly recommend Dr Fraser for her kindness too."
"Have had an excellent experience at WPMP over the past few months. I was referred in from my GP to Dr Newman's clinic to have some painful lumps and bumps removed from my scalp. Have received excellent care from everyone at the Practice and would highly recommend."
